Created from Bathyscaphe Trieste On January 23, 1960, Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh reached Challenger Deep aboard the Trieste bathyscaphe - the deepest point on Earth at 35,797 feet. They kept their searchlights off to watch the bioluminescence, describing the glowing creatures as "reverse snowfall" streaming upward past their descending vessel.
